Separation Anxiety
Wow, last night was a big deal. If my old friend Dan reads this, he is going to freak. I actually got rid of nearly all of my records last night (GASP!) Now I know most of you are probably thinking "CD's he means CD's" No, I mean records, 12" records... the kind that fill up crates in the spare bedroom of your house and require air conditioning so that they don't warp, and the kind that are the life's-blood of any respectable DJ. I really used to pride myself in my record collection... and no I didn't have anything that you would have wanted (all but you DW!)
It was bad enough when I got rid of my 1200's (lingo for Technics 1200's, or turntables) a few years ago, but I just haven't been able to part with the records... too many memories. Even still, as I sorted through the stacks and stacks and crates upon crates until the wee hours of the morning, I could look at a record and tell you how it started, how it ended, and what speed it was.. just from seeing the graphic on the center label.
I have to admit though, looking at those records was like seeing some old friends. Josh Wink and Public Enemy... wow what a classic. George Acosta, DJ Icey, the Crystal Method, and a billion artists that just went away after that one smash club hit. You guys will be missed. Oh wait, I guess that is why I have them on my iPod now! WOO HOO!

Ouch Scott! The 1200s and the records why? I understand the Puff Daddy and Salt n Pepper but DJ Icey, Acosta, and Wink that’s great music to this day. Sounds like the time I gave up my GI Joe collection at 14. Many years later I wished I had kept that stuff even though most likely I never would have touched it again. Don’t surrender too much history it’s nice to be able to look into the pass and reflect. Your children will want to know about that part of your life some day and a MP-3 wont tell the story. However I can understand the air conditioning problem it’s unfortunate they couldn’t be put in the garage or storage

I admire your courage here. It's good to let go of things from the past, even if they were good in order to continue moving forward and make room for more. I'm with Dan though on perhaps the family you create would like to get a firsthand glimpse of a part of your past life that was once of great importance to you. I remember when I visited my paternal grandparents when I was 17 and they showed me some of my mom's old Beatles albums such as "Beatles for Sale" and her old record player. I thought it was so cool and this is how I got turned on to this group. It was neat hear about how much of a music fan my mom used to be, while now she is different. Maybe you could save a few at a family members house? Even 6-12. I hope that you are trying to sell them at some vintage place. :) I guess you could always re-buy a favorite album or two down the road.
